2014 Marks 10th Year of Queen Mary 2. My Time To Be Part of Her World Cruise Then!

Cunard Queen Mary 2
Cunard Queen Mary 2

The Queen Mary 2 will celebrate 10 years in service and undertake her 8th world cruise / voyage season in 2014. And I am excited that I will be on the ship for a fairly sizeable 38 nights segment of it.
The ship was christened by Queen Elizabeth II on 8 January 2004, and the maiden voyage left Southampton in a flurry of fireworks on 12 January bound for Fort Lauderdale. The maiden voyage lasted 2 weeks, and the ship called at Madeira, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Barbados, St Thomas and finally arrived at Fort Lauderdale in Florida.

The Queen Mary 2's first World Voyage was in 2006 when the ship departed on 10 January for a circumnavigation of South America. This first world voyage was a rocky debut as the ship damaged a pod propeller while leaving Fort Lauderdale. This meant that Commodore Warwick, who was captaining the ship, had to cancel some ports of call as the ship had to travel at reduced speed. This created much upset and reports of unhappy passengers.

On 10 January 2014 the QM2 will leave Southampton for a 119 night world voyage that will take her down round the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, across the Indian Ocean to Perth Australia. She will then circumnavigate Australia before sailing through Asia and the Suez Canal back to Southampton.

I am booked to join the Queen Mary 2 for 38 nights of this 2014 adventure. I will be joining the ship in Sydney after the circumnavigation on Australia, and I will stay on the ship through to Dubai. Dubai being, of course, where the Queen Elizabeth 2 is now based.
By the time I get to Dubai in April 2014, the Queen Elizabeth 2 should have been converted into the luxury floating hotel that was originally planned when the ship was sold to Dubai. You can read more about the latest plans for the QE2 in my posting: “Finally, Plans To Turn the QE2 Into A Luxury Floating Hotel Will Happen”. If it has been converted, and is operating as a hotel by April 2014, I will make sure I spend at least one night there to revisit this iconic ship. I am intrigued to see what the ship will be like post having been converted.

I have booked a Queens Grill Q5 suite number 10058. The bulk of the Q5 suites are on on deck 9, and the balconies are just above the top of the lifeboats. Although they do not restrict your view, I think being on deck 10 is just a bit better as you have a broader and wider view.

The trip is a major cost, but for me (and I assume most people who go on world cruises or major segments) is part of checking off a want list of travel things that I want to do. I look forward to documenting the build up, the trip, destinations and formulating tips and advice for future travellers.

Luckily though I still have another major Cunard adventure to look forward to. At the end of this year I will be on the Queen Mary 2 for 21 nights. This is a crossing on 15 December from Southampton to New York, followed immediately by a cruise down to the Caribbean. I will be spending both Christmas and New Year on board. Returning to New York on 3 January.

I am hoping the crossing is less rocky and turbulent than the one we did on the Queen Elizabeth in December 2004. Read the blog and see the videos of the sea crashing over the bow of the ship: click here

The 5th episode of the All About Cunard is now available.

In the podcast I discuss each of the routes that the ships (Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria) will be taking, and how they differ and who they may appeal to most and why. I also look at what it means if you "pre-register" and how to get the best fare.

Cunard Launches the 2014 Routes and Registering Of Interest for 2014 World Cruises Today

The full routes that each of the 3 Cunard Queens will be travelling on their 2014 World Cruises are now formally released by Cunard.

Only the Queen Elizabeth is doing a more traditional world cruise that will see the ship travel from Southampton to the USA, through the Panama Canal and across to Australia and then back to Southampton via Asia.

The Queen Mary 2 will focus more on the Australian region, travelling down to the region via Cape Town. It will travel right round Australia before heading back to Sydney and sailing back to Southampton via Asia and the Suez Canal.

Meanwhile, Queen Victoria will journey to South America from Southampton via the USA and then round the Cape Horn and across to New Zealand and Australia. It will return to Southampton via Hawaii and the Panama Canal.

People can register interest and also order a brochure via their website at http://www.cunard.com that they say will be with people before the World Cruises and World Voyage segments go on sale on 5 September.

The fares are not yet announced, and travel agents waiting confirmation formally. But brochures are starting to be issued and so full details will be clearer over next few days.

For the first time, Cunard have the Vantage Fares promotion linked to these voyages. This means they guarantee that if the price falls you will get benefits on kind like on board credit or upgrade. They also are offering various incentives like hotel nights from 1 to 3 nights based on how long your cruise is.

I have a vested interest, as I will be booking on a segment. At this stage most likely either the QM2 or Queen Elizabeth from Sydney to Dubai.

Here are visuals of each of the 2014 Cunard World Cruises, and a short description

Cunard World Cruises 2014: due to be announced on 20 August?

Cunard usually announce the World Cruise routes for 2 years ahead by July. This year they are announcing them much later.

It seems they will announce the routes and prices on 20 August 2012 for 2014 World Cruises.

How do we know this?

The MD of Cunard (Peter Shanks) has been reported announcing in Australia the QM2 will do another circumnavigation of Sydney. This was a huge success in 2012.

He said: "When we announced Queen Mary 2s first circumnavigation back in 2010 we had a record number of bookings made within the first day,'' he said.

"Cunard bookings from Australia surged again when she undertook the historic voyage earlier this year.''

Adding that full details will be made public when the full routing is announced on 20 August.

Cruise Message Boards, like Cruise Critic, are seeing people saying the following has been told to them by travel agents about QM2:

Sailing roundtrip from Perth (Fremantle), 12 February 2014 (22 nights)
Sailing roundtrip from Melbourne, 17 February 2014 (23 nights)
Sailing roundtrip from Sydney, 19 February 2014 (23 nights)
Sailing roundtrip from Brisbane, 21 February 2014 (23 nights)

This suggests that QM2 will get to Australia via South Africa or South America. In 2013 they get there via Asia. Cunard tends to alternate by year the routing route around the world.

Cannot wait - as we will be booking some of the World Cruise 2014..

Power problems are still affecting Cunard's Queen Mary 2

Cunard's Queen Mary 2 has been suffering from unexplained power cutouts again. It seems this is at least the 3rd time it has happened.

The ship lost power while travelling from Australia to Japan on the 2012 while on the world cruise. It is reported that the QM2 lost power twice. There were also some power issues while travelling to Australia.

Cunard said: "After experiencing brief power interruptions, when backup systems immediately kicked in, full power was swiftly restored to Queen Mary 2 on each occasion. Hotel services were restored to the ship within 15 minutes, there was virtually no impact on guests and the ship is continuing on her voyage as normal."

Cunard's Queen Victoria is "Pretty in Pink" in Sydney

Cunard's Queen Victoria is "Pretty in Pink" in Sydney
19 February 2010 - History was made in Sydney today when, in a world first, Cunard Line's Queen Victoria was illuminated in pink while berthed at Sydney's Circular Quay. Queen Victoria was bathed in vibrant pink light from dusk to support Australia's National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), which officially launched its 2010 fundraising target of $17 million at an event onboard. Pink lights illuminated the entire ship, providing the ideal setting for the event.

"Pink has become synonymous with the fight against breast cancer, so we are delighted to offer NBCF the opportunity to boost awareness of research and claim a world first by being the first to illuminate a liner in pink," said Peter Shanks, president of Cunard Line.

Queen Victoria will make history again this time next year when she sails her first "Americas" season, traversing the Panama Canal on more than one voyage, making rare roundtrip sailings from Los Angeles to Hawaii, plus debuting her maiden Mexico Getaway voyage.

Mayor Gavin Newsom Gives Cunard's Queen Victoria a Golden Gate Welcome during Maiden Call to San Francisco

27 January 2010 - Wrapping up her Expedition of the Americas segment, a part of her current world voyage, Cunard Line's Queen Victoria made her inaugural visit to San Francisco today. Welcoming her to this historic maritime port was the honourable Mayor Gavin Newsom, along with travel agents, media and local dignitaries - including the British Consul-General of San Francisco, Julian Evans. In addition, by official order of proclamation, Mayor Newsom declared today as "Cunard Queen Victoria Day" in San Francisco.

"The City is proud to welcome Queen Victoria to San Francisco's waterfront as we so warmly welcomed her sister ship, Queen Mary 2, in 2007. Her arrival creates work for our longshoremen and women and business for our hotels, restaurants and shops," said Mayor Newsom. "As part of our commitment to create jobs and economic vitality, the City is working diligently to renovate San Francisco's Pier 27 into an international cruise terminal. We invite Cunard and all the lines to return often to this world-renowned cruise destination," added Mayor Newsom.

"We are once again delighted by the warm welcome we received today, and it is with great pride that we now add San Francisco to the list of more than 150 different ports visited since Queen Victoria began service two years ago," said Captain Paul Wright, Master, Queen Victoria. "Our maiden call today marks Queen Victoria's third maiden call on this world voyage and our only U.S. maiden call of the eight in total on this around-the-world-journey," he added.

Also welcoming Queen Victoria to the City by the Bay was the CEO and President of the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau, Joe D'Alessandro; President of the San Francisco Port Commission, Rodney Fong; and the President and CEO of Nautilus International Holding Corporate (parent company of Metro Cruise Services), James Callahan.

Queen Victoria continues her third World Voyage upon departing San Francisco this evening at approximately 6:00pm, crossing the Pacific en route to her next port of call: Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii.

Queen Victoria will spend more time on the west coast in winter 2011, sailing her Americas voyages, when she will make two transits through the Panama Canal, two roundtrip voyages from Los Angeles to Hawaii, and her first short Getaway voyage to Mexico.

World Cruises: Exploration In Style And Comfort For The 21st Century

This from travelvideo.yv about world cruising which talks about Cunard's world cruises:

"The history of civilization is the story of exploration - extraordinary journeys into the unknown, lasting months if not years. Each had its own purpose - conquest, treasure, knowledge - and each ended with fabulous stories of new worlds for a fascinated public back home.

Luckily, today's explorers and adventurers do not have to suffer the hardships endured by the Vikings, Columbus, Captain Cook or Darwin; they have a much more comfortable, even luxurious way to roam the globe: the world cruise.

Seven members of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) cater to that growing population of travelers struck with extreme wanderlust, those adventurous vacationers determined to explore every continent and exotic new destination and eager to bring their own fabulous stories home again. As reflected in their innovative and ambitious itineraries, all six companies, some with more than 50 years experience circling the globe in style, report that demand for world cruises is greater than ever before.

From west to east, from the Arctic to the Antarctic, world cruises represent the perfect opportunity, for those who have the time, to visit destinations well out of the mainstream, such as Myanmar (formerly Burma), Oman, Vietnam, Iwo Jima and new ports of call in Africa and the Pacific. They also visit many of the world's major cultural and historical sites and capital cities in Asia, Europe and the Americas.

World cruises, lasting approximately 100 days or more, typically follow good weather, ensuring that passengers, wherever they are in the world, can do their exploring in comfort. Most travel westward, departing in January, but there are exceptions, notably a rare opportunity to sail north to south, from one pole to the other.

CLIA member ships offering world cruises range in size, carrying as few as 400 or over 1,000 passengers. In 2008 they include the newest ocean liner in service as well as several of the highest rated and most popular luxury vessels. All have been designed to navigate with ease the open oceans they will travel through. Although cruise segments of a few weeks or more are always offered - enabling passengers to fly to embarkation points around the world - cruise lines report that traditionally more than half the passengers sign up for the entire voyage.

Here is a summary of CLIA member world cruises for 2008, and one which departs in September, 2007:

CRYSTAL CRUISES
Crystal Serenity, voted "World's Best Cruise Ship" in 2006 by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler, will depart Los Angeles on January 19 for a 108-day odyssey through Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, India, Northern Africa and the Mediterranean. Overnight stays will be offered in New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar, India, Egypt and Monaco. Visiting 45 ports in 22 countries, it will be Crystal's 13th annual world cruise.

CUNARD LINE
Two of Cunard Line's three "queens" will offer world cruises in 2008, continuing a tradition of global voyages that the company began in 1922.On January 13, Cunard's newest ship, Queen Victoria, and the legendary Queen Elizabeth 2, beginning her last year of venerable service to the company, will sail from New York to Fort Lauderdale where they will then part ways. Queen Victoria will continue on a 105-day Pathway to the Explorers maiden world cruise, visiting 36 cities in 23 countries, and Queen Elizabeth 2 will make her 90-day South America, Pacific and Far East Odyssey, visiting 17 countries.

HOLLAND AMERICA LINE
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of its first world cruise, Holland America in 2008 will offer four "Grand Voyages" on two ships. ms Amsterdam sails westward from Fort Lauderdale on January 4 for a 114-day world cruise visiting 40 ports in 26 countries on six continents. ms Prinsendam will make a 68-day cruise to South America and the Antarctic starting January 3, followed by a 73-day journey to the exotic ports of Africa, for a combined 141-day world cruise. And, departing September 19, ms Amsterdam will explore Asia and Australia on a 65-day voyage to 20 ports in 13 countries.

NORWEGIAN COASTAL VOYAGE
MS Fram, Norwegian Coastal Voyage's newest ship, will make the first "longitudinal" world cruise this fall when it sets sail from Reykjavik, Iceland on September 18, 2007 for a 67-day trip from the Arctic to the Antarctic. Visiting 44 ports in 17 countries on four continents, the voyage will include stops in Scotland, Ireland, Canada, the eastern US, the western Caribbean, the Panama Canal, the west coast of South America and the fjords of Chile and the land of penguins - Antarctica. For those unable to plan for 2007, a similar world cruise is anticipated for the same time in 2008.

PRINCESS CRUISES
Princess returns to world cruising in 2008 with a 102-day adventure aboard the Pacific Princess. Departing on January 10 from Fort Lauderdale, the 670-passenger ships first round the world voyage will take in 42 destinations in South America, the South Pacific, Australia, Asia, the Middle East and Europe before concluding in Southampton, England. Individual highlights include visits to the Machu Picchu, the Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat and the Pyramids of Egypt. Then, in 2009, Princess plans to offer two world cruises - 107-day voyages from Fort Lauderdale on the Tahitian Princess and the Royal Princess.

REGENT SEVEN SEAS CRUISES
San Francisco is the port of embarkation on January 6 for Seven Seas Voyager's 115-night world cruise to the Pacific, Asia, India, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, North Africa, Bermuda and Florida. Featuring 11 overnight stays for in-depth exploration - in Tahiti, Sydney, Osaka, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Ho Chi Minh City, Mumbai and Dubai - the voyage to51 ports in 26 countries is also highlighted by visits to New Zealand, Singapore, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Oman and the Red Sea.

SILVERSEA CRUISES
Departing from Fort Lauderdale on January 16, Silver Shadow will sail on a "Rhythms of the World" cruise, covering 25 countries and over 50 ports in 110-days. After sailing through the Panama Canal, the ship will journey through Hawaii and the South Pacific, including Iwo Jima and Guam, much of Asia, including Vietnam, Egypt and the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Highlights of the voyage include high profile partnerships and special events with such brands as Ferragamo and Men's Vogue as well as celebrity chef Cat Cora and film critic Rex Reed.
