Cunard’s Queen Victoria Being Taken Out of Service And Cancelling Cruise on 3 October To Make Repairs.

Cunard Queen Victoria in Rotterdam Holland http://www.allaboutcunard.com

I was intrigued yesterday when my cruise agent (Jane Chadwick of GoCruiseWithJane.com) contacted me to say that Cunard had just announced a 2 day short cruise on 17 October on the Queen Victoria from Southampton to Zeebrugge (Bruges). The prices are very sharp, with Inside at £150/ $300 through to even Grills from £349/ $520. This I assumed was due to announcing a new schedule just over a month of departure, but it got me wondering what had happened to create a new cruise at such short notice?

After some investigation the reason was very clear. Cunard are having to take the Queen Victoria out of service to fix a problem with the propulsion service, which means they cannot maintain the speed they need to meet their cruise commitments and ports of call. So they have cancelled a cruise called “Adriatic Discovery” that was due to leave Southampton on 3 October to put the ship into dry dock in Germany to make repairs. The short cruise they have announced at the end of that appears to be a try out after the repairs before it resumes the planned cruise schedule.

The Queen Victoria is going to be repositioning to the Caribbean soon for the season there, and so I assume they wanted to do the repairs before that long repositioning and to ensure the ship was in good order while still fairly near her home port, and the German Shipyards Cunard use to do repairs and refits.

People on board the ship have reported some changes have been made to current schedule which is likely due to the problem with propulsion system. For example, the Queen Victoria Black sea cruise will be affected by a morning rather than afternoon call at Palma and that Oporto has been replaced by Vigo.

The communication to those affected by the cancellation of the full cruise from Cunard explained more, along with the compensation offered as follows:

“Queen Victoria – Adriatic Discovery.Voyage V224 – Departing 3 October 2012

I am very sorry to have to advise you that we have unfortunately had to cancel this voyage. This is an incredibly rare occurrence and I am very sorry that we have had to cancel at such short notice.

It has become apparent that we need to undertake some essential maintenance work on one of Queen Victoria’s propulsion units. Although there are no safety issues relating to this maintenance, it does preclude us from achieving the speeds required to deliver our voyage itineraries and therefore it will be necessary to take the ship out of service for a short period.

Recognising how much you will have been looking forward to sailing with us, we have listed some voyages where we still have availability. We are able to transfer some or all of your voyage fare to a new booking, and in addition, will provide you an additional credit of 15% of the fare paid for voyage V224 in recognition of this late change to your travel plans. Alternatively, you may wish to receive a full refund of the cost of your fare, and we will set up a credit of 15% of the fare paid for you to enjoy at a later date. We calculate the value of your credit to be £XXX per person.

Please contact your travel agent by19 September 2012 to confirm that you have received this message and wish to either transfer monies paid to a new booking, utilising the future voyage credit we have offered, or to be refunded your fare in full via your agent. We will consider the refund of reasonable expenses that you have incurred as a result of this cancellation.

Once again please accept my apology for having to make such a late cancellation to your voyage as well as the disruption and upset this no doubt will have caused. Please also be assured that we have not taken the decision to cancel lightly, but it is very important that we undertake this essential maintenance at the earliest opportunity.

I very much hope that you may choose to travel with us on Queen Victoria or another Cunard ship in the future.”

Have you been affected by the propulsion system on board affecting your cruise? Or are you affected by this cancellation? Please leave a comment or contact me by email or twitter with any comments, observations and thoughts!

Andy Fitzsimmons: A passenger's view of Cunard's 3 Queens Diamond Jubilee Event

3 Queens Jubilee Celebration
I have posted a number of articles about Cunard's Diamond Jubilee event in Southampton. I add to this series with a perspective by Andy Fitzsimmons who was on the Queen Victoria coming back from a cruise into Southampton on the day of the event.

In his Flickr Account he has shared a perspective and many amazing photos. Some of them are below, but also visit Andy Fitzsimmons 3 Queens Jubilee Celebration Photo Set for many more, and his full review and comment.

Some key points he talks about are:

  • Not the first time that 3 Queens had been together in their home port, the first occasion being on 22 April 2008 when Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria met up with Queen Elizabeth 2 for the final time, this was the first time the current Cunard fleet had arrived together.
  • Queen Mary 2 arrived from New York, Queen Victoria from Bergen and Queen Elizabeth from Barcelona
  • He was up on deck from 3.30am! Even by 4am crowds were lining Town Quay and Mayflower Park, while helicopters hovered overhead filming the event.
  • On Queen Mary 2 a group was dressed in period costume waiving union flags, and atop the mast, the Royal Mail pennant could be spotted flying proudly alongside the red ensign and Cunard house flag, together with what appeared to be the ship’s callsign (ZCEF6), spelt out in signal flags while further aft, a giant banner in the style of a union flag and bearing the legend ‘Congratulations Ma’am’, could be seen covering the name board.
  • The celebrations were hampered by the weather: Red Arrows display was cancelled, and fireworks for the departure were very obscured by low cloud
  • The 3 ships departed again later that evening. Queen Mary 2 for Rotterdam, Queen Victoria for La CorÅ©na and Queen Elizabeth to Hamburg.
  • Despite all the fuss: He spoke to a guest at breakfast who asked wheat all the fuss had been about earlier. They seem to have missed all the announcements and materials put in the cabins...

Thanks to Andy for posting the amazing photos and his review, which you should read in full on his Flickr Page

This coming weekend is the Diamond Jubilee Celebration Weekend for Queen Elizabeth II. The 4 days of celebrations have many major events across the UK. There is an extra public holiday day added to the weekend.

Cunard are making a major effort due to their history and Cunard's link to the Monarchy and the Queen in particular. She has named many Cunard ships during her reign. The chart above shows the plans for the day which includes:

  • 5.30 a.m. – 6.15 a.m: 3 ships arrive

  • All day event (festival & stalls) in Mayflower Park

  • 10.20 p.m. - 10.35 p.m: City Terminal Fireworks display

  • 11 p.m: All 3 ships sail down Southampton Water

  • Here are some reports about the plans they have across the weekend.
    • Cruise Critic writes: "It'll be an early start on Tuesday, June 5 for anybody wanting to witness the simultaneous arrival of three Cunard Queens in Southampton. But there will be opportunities throughout the day to celebrate the Jubilee with Cunard and the City of Southampton". Read more
    • Manchester Evening News writes: "celebrations take place onboard all day as well, including talks from guest speakers with royal connections and a display of royal art, including pieces by HRH The Prince of Wales, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and Lord Snowdon, on all three ship". Read more.
    • Seaview Cruises writes: " Cunard's Three Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations on Tuesday June 5 - expected to be the biggest jubilee event outside London as Cunard's three ship fleet sail in convoy into Southampton for the first time - will be enhanced by the launch of ‘Cunard FM’ radio for this one special day only.
    • The radio station will broadcast on 87.7FM from 0800 hours right through to midnight. As well as music during the day, in the afternoon, the station will feature celebrity interviews and two special highlights, introduced by ‘Cunard FM’s’ own presenter, Keith Maynard, Queen Mary 2’s entertainment director. Cunard celebrating the Queen's Jubilee with a 3 ship tribute in June 2012

With their strong historical links to the British Royal Family, Cunard are going to celebrate this year's Queen's Jubilee with a big event on the June 5 Bank Holiday in the UK.

The plan is for all of the 3 serving Cunard ships (Queen Mary2; Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth) to all be in their old home port of Southampton on the same day.

All 3 ships will sail in that morning in a single line and no doubt many boats will join them for the sail up the Solent.

Later that day all 3 will set of on various cruises, including a round UK trip visit.

Should be quite an event and sight.

Cunard Queen Victoria: updated review and photos

Cunard Queen Victoria in Rotterdam Holland
    Cunard Queen Victoria

One of the biggest challenges Cunard may face with the Queen Victoria, is if it can attract enough premium passengers.

The newest Cunard ship, the Queen Victoria is a cruise ship. This is unlike her predecessors which tended to be more "ocean liners". They tended to look different, especially the bow which was designed to slice through the aggressive Atlantic sea on regular trans-Atlantic crossings - but they also tended to be "one offs". They were distinctive and unique. There is no other ship that looks like either the QE2 or the Queen Mary 2.

QUEEN VICTORIA: A PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY: MY REVIEW OF THE BOOK

    Queen Victoria: A Photographic Journey
Cover of Queen Victoria: A Photographic Journey

This book is part of the "a photographic journey" series by the two massive Cunard fans called Chris Frame and Rachelle Cross.

I have previously reviewed other books by these two Cunard fans,  and so was delighted to see that the Queen Victoria is now available as part of the series.

This is a larger sized book than the QM2 book, and so the images of all aspects of the ship can be enjoyed even more. I think the book benefits from the larger size as fans (or the interested) can better study the pictures.

Like with the other books by Chris and Rachelle, most of the pictures are their own and they cover the outside, passenger rooms and then also take us behind the scenes to see some of the areas of the ship that as passengers we never get to see. Due to their connections with Cunard, they are able to share these with us.

It is also evidence of the respect that Cunard has in their ability to cover the ship that Captain Rynd contributes to the book with his perspective. Also Alistair Greener who runs the official Cunard blog and is one of the Entertainment Directors for Cunard, wrote the foreward.

I have been on the ship just the once, and found the book a great reminder of the full scale and the detail of the ship. And realised too that I had actually missed out seeing some of this large and impressive ship. So it serves as both a way of preparing for a trip, or as a reminder afterwards.

There are some 120 pages in this well produced book that is published by The History Press and first appeared in 2010. The book covers the various accomodation, restaurants, bar and lounges, public rooms and behind the scenes. There is a short history of Cunard and then details and commentary on the various sections.

This is like the others in the series a book that shows passion and has a great balance of content and pictures.

Another great edition to any Cunard and cruise fans collection.

Cunard Queen Victoria in Rotterdam Holland

One of the biggest challenges Cunard may face with their newest ship, the Queen Victoria, is if it can attract enough premium passengers.

The Queen Victoria quite simply from the outside looks like many other cruise ships from the outside, which is not remarkable since it was built using a Carnival (the owner of Cunard) template structure called "vista".

One of the marketing differences for Cunard has been its uniqueness, its specialness - and the feeling that there is something exclusive about being on one of their ships. Even if you were travelling in an inside cabin whose fares are not that different to competition. You feel you are part of something almost historic. I do think this is driven by the transatlantic habit and schedules that generates a lot of this, and also the fact that the "crossings" do attract celebrity, names and the rich (as well as the regular cruise and ship addict).

There is no doubt that Cunard have done an excellent job, in my view at least, in designing and fitting out the inside of the ship in a rich, plush and feel that harks to the romance and tradition of the old liners. It was interesting that the first comments left on FLickr when I posted my photos of the interior, where about how the interiors look "Titanic" and traditional cruise liner like. Inside the ship it feels distinctive.

There are some very large and premium cabins in Queens Grill, and there is a special access (by your cruise card/ room key) to deck 11 and deck 12 for only Princess Grill (kind of "club class") and Queens Grill (kind of First Class). Here there is a lounge, the separate dining rooms, an outside courtyard and then a deck only for Grill passengers with better loungers. So there is an attempt to create this special enclave that Cunard nurtures and I think is part of and integral to the Cunard story and positioning that appeals to some but adds to the sense of glamour versus other cruise companies.

However, I am not sure that the schedules that the Queen Victoria will run as a cruise ship with the limitations on what that means versus doing regular "crossing" schedule, will make it have the same mystery, allure and specialness as its sister ships like the QE2 (had as it heads to retirement) and the Queen Mary 2. It is not the right design to handle a regular trans-Atlantic crossing which hammers a ship and takes some designing for - and also having seen pictures taken from the QE2 on their joint crossing at the start of both their 2008 world cruises where the Queen Victoria struggled more through the Atlantic winter seas, I am not sure many would be up for doing it either!

Some facts and figures before more thoughts and review:

The ship has 990 staterooms, holding a maximum of 1980 passengers. It's maiden voyage set sail on 11 December 2007. It is 90000 tons.

We went on a 4 night "taster" cruise to a few European ports out of Southampton from 2 - 6 May. We travelled in Queens Grill, on a super deal thanks to our excellent travel agent (Jane Chadwick; Go cruise). That deal may already indicate the challenge in attracting people to pay a high premium to travel Queens Grill on regular cruises on the ship versus just doing a suite on other brands.

    Q4 Penthouse Cabin

We had a Q4 Penthouse (5106). I am not sure why it is called a penthouse as it was on deck 5. It was an unusual shape, but large. I suspect there was some structural beam in the middle of the room and so it had been designed around it. There was a hallway and then a desk area and bar area with lots of glasses, fridge and basin opposite. Then there was a lounge area, with sofa that could fold out into a bed and flat screen TV and DVD player, and the door onto a large balcony with 2 chairs and table. Opposite the lounge area was the bedroom with high and very comfortable bed. To the left as you lie on the bed, was an area with desk and cupboards. This was a strange space that I suspect they could not think of what to do with it. There was a walk in cupboard, which had more coat hangers than I have ever seen in my life! Then the bathroom with very large Jacuzzi bath and separate glass surround shower. Off this room was the toilet and basin. Unlike other suite style cabins, there was only one basin and not 2. Off this room was a door leading back to the hallway.

A video I took of the cabin can be seen on YouTube, or on the blog.

    Queens Grill Restaurant

This is, as mentioned earlier, is on deck 11. One thing that is better than the Grills Restaurants on Queen Mary 2 which are on the Promenade Deck and so is no view other than people going for a stroll on the deck looking in, these are right at the top of the ship with wall to ceiling windows and so glorious views across the ocean.

The service is, as you expect from Cunard, excellent. They have their "White Star Service" philosophy and training which shows.

In Queens Grill you get to chose at dinner from the huge menu choices of the day, or from the ala carte menu choices (and with notice, you can also ask for a dish they takes your fancy that is not on the menu).

Personally, I felt the food on both the QE2 Queens Grill and Queen Mary 2 Queens Grill was better, despite how good it was on here. The food here felt a bit more pre-prepared. I am not sure if that is a memory thing, but as we are back on the Queen Mary 2 later this year for a crossing, I will be able to check!

The Grills lounge serves afternoon tea for Grill passengers. This is great with sandwiches, scones and cake - but a bit stressful as the service was very erratic. I think the restaurant staff get allocated sessions and resent it cutting into their time off and also as different people each day it is not consistent nor slick through experience.

    Public Rooms

Rather than spend time on each, the key thing is (as mentioned earlier) these are well done and large. Having been on P&O Arcadia (which is also a Vista style and was originally started to be built as the QV but was allocated to them instead earlier on), I was amazed at how much more public space there seemed to be.

There is the huge, several deck and impressive Grand Lobby. The large Queens Room where there is a band and dancing, the large Royal Arcade shopping area and then the impressive Royal Court theatre. Plus of course the bars all over the ship.

    American

Although Cunard is an old English brand and has a very English heritage and feel, the ship (as with the Queen Mary 2) is American. By this I mean the on-board currency is the US$ and so everything is priced in dollars. If you gamble, take dollars with you as they charge a 3 per cent fee to convert currencies either at the casino desk or on the conversion machines. It also mean if you are not from the USA take plug converters as all but 1 plug is US - and the voltage is the US voltage.

    Overall

We really liked the ship from the inside, and lived the Queens Grill experience. It may not be "special" enough to attract us back much. It will be interesting to see what happens!

Cunard's Queen Victoria is "Pretty in Pink" in Sydney

Cunard's Queen Victoria is "Pretty in Pink" in Sydney
19 February 2010 - History was made in Sydney today when, in a world first, Cunard Line's Queen Victoria was illuminated in pink while berthed at Sydney's Circular Quay. Queen Victoria was bathed in vibrant pink light from dusk to support Australia's National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), which officially launched its 2010 fundraising target of $17 million at an event onboard. Pink lights illuminated the entire ship, providing the ideal setting for the event.

"Pink has become synonymous with the fight against breast cancer, so we are delighted to offer NBCF the opportunity to boost awareness of research and claim a world first by being the first to illuminate a liner in pink," said Peter Shanks, president of Cunard Line.

Queen Victoria will make history again this time next year when she sails her first "Americas" season, traversing the Panama Canal on more than one voyage, making rare roundtrip sailings from Los Angeles to Hawaii, plus debuting her maiden Mexico Getaway voyage.

Mayor Gavin Newsom Gives Cunard's Queen Victoria a Golden Gate Welcome during Maiden Call to San Francisco

27 January 2010 - Wrapping up her Expedition of the Americas segment, a part of her current world voyage, Cunard Line's Queen Victoria made her inaugural visit to San Francisco today. Welcoming her to this historic maritime port was the honourable Mayor Gavin Newsom, along with travel agents, media and local dignitaries - including the British Consul-General of San Francisco, Julian Evans. In addition, by official order of proclamation, Mayor Newsom declared today as "Cunard Queen Victoria Day" in San Francisco.

"The City is proud to welcome Queen Victoria to San Francisco's waterfront as we so warmly welcomed her sister ship, Queen Mary 2, in 2007. Her arrival creates work for our longshoremen and women and business for our hotels, restaurants and shops," said Mayor Newsom. "As part of our commitment to create jobs and economic vitality, the City is working diligently to renovate San Francisco's Pier 27 into an international cruise terminal. We invite Cunard and all the lines to return often to this world-renowned cruise destination," added Mayor Newsom.

"We are once again delighted by the warm welcome we received today, and it is with great pride that we now add San Francisco to the list of more than 150 different ports visited since Queen Victoria began service two years ago," said Captain Paul Wright, Master, Queen Victoria. "Our maiden call today marks Queen Victoria's third maiden call on this world voyage and our only U.S. maiden call of the eight in total on this around-the-world-journey," he added.

Also welcoming Queen Victoria to the City by the Bay was the CEO and President of the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau, Joe D'Alessandro; President of the San Francisco Port Commission, Rodney Fong; and the President and CEO of Nautilus International Holding Corporate (parent company of Metro Cruise Services), James Callahan.

Queen Victoria continues her third World Voyage upon departing San Francisco this evening at approximately 6:00pm, crossing the Pacific en route to her next port of call: Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii.

Queen Victoria will spend more time on the west coast in winter 2011, sailing her Americas voyages, when she will make two transits through the Panama Canal, two roundtrip voyages from Los Angeles to Hawaii, and her first short Getaway voyage to Mexico.

Queen Victoria cruise ship faces U.S. ban after vomiting bug outbreak

    this on: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1241820/Queen-Victoria-cruise-ship-faces-U-S-ban-vomiting-bug-outbreak.html#

Thousands of passengers travelling on a British cruise ship could be refused entry into the U.S. after an outbreak of a winter vomiting bug.

The Queen Victoria will not be allowed to dock if the virus reaches an epidemic rate, where 15 per cent of those onboard are affected, authorities warn.

So far, 30 people have been confined to their cabins.
The captain of the Queen Victoria cruise ship has ordered a major cleaning operation after an outbreak of a vomiting bug

The ship's captain has ordered a major cleaning operation of handrails, dining rooms and other public areas in a bid to protect the remaining 2,000 or so passengers and crew. The 90,000-tonne ship, the second largest ever built by Cunard, is due to arrive at New York on Tuesday before travelling to the Caribbean for a two-week tour. It left Southampton on Monday.

A spokesman for New York's City Economic Development Corporation, which is in charge of passenger arrivals, said it was monitoring the situation. One passenger said: 'It's actually very worrying here at the moment. We've saved up a lot of money for this cruise and now we're scared to leave our cabins in case we come down with the illness.

'When the message came around that we might not be able to dock in New York our hearts sank as my wife and I have never been there and that was going to be the highlight of the trip. 'We're keen dancers, but we haven't even done that yet as that's the place where you're most likely to catch it.'

The Queen Victoria is the second largest ship ever built by Cunard and weighs 90,000 tonnes. It has seven restaurants, 13 bars, three swimming pools, a ballroom and a theatre.A spokesman for Cunard Line said: 'We can confirm that there have been a small number of reported cases of viral gastroenteritis among the passengers and crew on board Queen Victoria during her current transatlantic crossing to New York.'The clinical symptoms are consistent with Norovirus, a mild but very common and highly contagious gastrointestinal virus, which is easily passed from person to person and this has been confirmed by sample analysis.'

It is the latest luxury cruise liner to by sickness in a matter of weeks.A total of 519 passengers fell ill with norovirus during three cruises on the Boudicca, despite its owners insisting the ship was free from the virus.Fred Olsen Cruise Lines said the vessel had been deep-cleaned twice following the outbreaks, but the virus has also returned to plague passengers at least twice..
