Cunard Welcomes Archbishop Desmond Tutu aboard Queen Mary 2

This article appeared on the cruise club newsletter

"The Most Reverend Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu arrived in Cape Town, South Africa last Thursday after enjoying a segment of Cunard Line's 2010 World Voyage onboard the legendary Queen Mary 2. Upon the flagship's arrival - her maiden call to Cape Town - Archbishop Tutu, flanked by Captain Nick Bates and Cunard Line President Peter Shanks, unveiled a plaque that read: "This plaque was unveiled by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu to commemorate his voyage onboard Queen Mary 2 between Port Louis and Cape Town from 20 March to 25 March 2010."

During the voyage, guests enjoyed a standing room only Cunard Insights Q&A session and lecture with ArchbishopTutu, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism, the Gandhi Peace Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Additionally, guests had the opportunity to participate in a silent auction and bid on advanced copies of Archbishop Tutu's new book, "Made for Goodness," co-written by his daughter Mpho Andrea Tutu. Proceeds from the silent auction benefited his charity, the Zithulele Hospital based in Eastern Cape province.

"It was an honour to have Archbishop Tutu onboard Queen Mary 2 during this World Voyage, especially as the ship sailed into Cape Town for the first time," said Peter Shanks. "Our guests were thrilled to have the opportunity to meet this living luminary, and I am delighted to say that he now holds a very special place in Cunard's 170-year history."

Archbishop Tutu joins Cunard's illustrious legacy of welcoming world-famous guests and politicians, including Winston Churchill, President Nelson Mandela, Lady Margaret Thatcher, Elizabeth Taylor, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Rod Stewart and Buzz Aldrin. "

Cunard and Fincantieri Preview Queen Elizabeth at Seatrade Cruise Shipping Miami

16 March 2010 - Building on the excitement of Cunard's 2011-2012 Voyage Programme announcement yesterday, Cunard President Peter Shanks and Fincantieri CEO Giuseppe Bono previewed a special cutaway model of the new Queen Elizabeth at Seatrade Cruise Shipping Miami today. At approximately eight feet long, nearly two feet high and weighing 175 pounds, the rare cutaway style affords a more detailed glimpse of Cunard's newest Queen, debuting in October, and will be on display all week at the annual cruise industry gathering.

"We are very excited about the progress of Queen Elizabeth, and seeing this masterful cutaway model just adds to our anticipation of her imminent arrival," said Peter Shanks. "With each passing milestone, we are ever closer to realizing our vision of returning to a three-ship fleet."

Announced yesterday, the 2011 maiden season for Queen Elizabeth offers a wide-ranging series of itineraries in Europe and beyond from her home port of Southampton, with a total of 52 maiden calls.

Included in next year's line-up are four sailings to the Mediterranean and one Voyage to the Holy Land, which includes calls in Jerusalem, Galilee and Cairo. Also available will be a series of 14-day Baltic voyages that include a full day and overnight call in St. Petersburg, two 7-day Fjord departures, an 11-day voyage to the North Cape, a maiden Around the British Isles voyage, plus a number of voyages to the Atlantic Isles and Canary Islands.

On 13 January 2011, Cunard will stage another spectacular Cunard Royal Rendezvous of its three Queens in New York City - exactly three years to the day that Queen Mary 2, QE2 and Queen Victoria met there - this time with the new Queen Elizabeth making her maiden call to New York City, to be joined by Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria.

Cunard have announced that most of the 21 trans-Atlantic voyages planned for 2011 on the Queen Mary 2 will be seven days long. They have usually only been 6 days.

They go on to sya: "Cunard already plans to operate several longer, seven-night trans-Atlantic voyages this coming summer, and they've been selling well, prompting the permanent change."

"People are really responding to the idea of having more time on a trans-Atlantic voyage," Cunard spokeswoman Jackie Chase told USA TODAY.

"The longer crossings will become the norm," she says.

Cunard Sale set to be annual event

This report was on: http://www.ttglive.com/

Cunard chiefs are looking to make the Cunard Sale an annual event after revealing that this year’s promotion brought in higher yields and stronger support from agents.

The three-month promotion, which ended on February 28, was the second the brand has run.

It was modelled on the famous Harrods Sale and offered various reductions which included savings of up to £300. Transatlantic crossings onboard the Queen Mary 2 started at £899.

Cunard head of marketing Richard Curtis said better advance sales meant the line went into this year’s promotion more than 10% better sold.

This meant it could keep prices higher than those of its first campaign, when transatlantic sailings were offered from £699. He estimated that as a result, yields were at least 10% higher this year, with transatlantic sailings and Cunard’s 2011 world cruises selling particularly well.

“What we are seeing is that the Cunard Sale has captured people’s imagination,” he said. “They are now looking out for it and waiting
to book.”

Curtis also praised the strong support this year’s campaign had attracted from the trade.

“The response from agents was even greater than before and I think this was because it was the second year,” he said.

“The sales message is simple, and that makes it easy for agents to engage in and communicate to their customers.”

Curtis said Cunard would launch more promotions later this year, although details have yet to be confirmed. A key focus will be the launch of the Queen Elizabeth on October 11, and details of its maiden voyage are due to be unveiled “soon”.

The line is continuing to push its agent training packs, launched at the end of 2009 with 10,000 distributed to retailers. It is also planning to repeat a poster promotion which showcased the benefits of the Cunard ships aimed at counter staff

Cunard Line Announces Queen Mary 2's First Circumnavigation of Australia

8 March 2010 - Cunard Line has announced that the world's grandest ocean liner, its majestic Queen Mary 2, will be based in Australia in 2012 for a history-making circumnavigation which will see her visit five states and the Northern Territory.

Queen Mary 2's Royal Circumnavigation of Australia is a first for Cunard.

The largest ship ever to visit Australia, Queen Mary 2 will call at eight Australian ports during her time Down Under including Sydney, Fremantle, Adelaide and the Whitsundays, as well as maiden visits to Cairns (Yorkey's Knob), Darwin, Melbourne and Brisbane. Her circumnavigation will also include a call at Bali.

Australians will be able to choose from three circumnavigation options - a 22-night voyage departing Sydney on 14 February 2012, a 20-night voyage departing Fremantle on 8 February 2012 and a 21-night voyage departing Adelaide on 11 February 2012.

In all, Queen Mary 2 will spend 28 nights in Australian waters, as she sails from Cape Town to Sydney via Fremantle and Adelaide, and then circumnavigates the country. As a result, Fremantle, Adelaide and Sydney will each enjoy two visits from the liner during her Australian season.

The Australian deployment will mark the longest period of time that Queen Mary 2 has been based in one country outside of her northern hemisphere home ports of Southampton and New York.

Peter Shanks, president of Cunard Line, said, "Cunard has strong and proud links with Australia, going back many years."

"Recognising the enduring appeal and increased demand from Australians for the unique Cunard Line experience, we are delighted to offer this series of legendary voyages for our flagship Queen Mary 2 in Australia 2012," he said.

The Royal Circumnavigation of Australia will go on sale this spring as part of the announcement of the 2012 World Voyage programme.
